Elaine Mayes is a photographer who has been working with camera-produced images for fifty-seven years. Her photographs have been extensively exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Steven Kasher Gallery, New York; the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu (now the Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House), Hawaii; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Joseph Bellows Gallery, La Jolla, California. Currently, Mayes lives in Denver, New York, and is preparing a retrospective for the SCAD Museum of Art in
Savannah, Georgia. Her books include When I Dance (Lafayette, CA: Acalanes High School, 1969), It Happened in Monterey (Culver City, CA: Britannia Press, 2002), and Recently (Chapel Hill, NC: Daylight Books, 2015). She retired from teaching photography, video, and film at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 2001.
