Robert Harding Pittman grew up in Boston and Hamburg, the son of a German mother and an American father. He received his M.F.A. in photography and film/video at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, after earning his M.S. at the University of California, Berkeley, in environmental engineering, a field of study that continues to inform his work.

Pittman’s main interest is how different cultures interact with the environment and manage “development.” His project Anonymization (Heidelberg, Germany: Kehrer Verlag, 2012), a photographic study of worldwide urban sprawl, was nominated for the Prix Pictet and a German PhotoBook Prize, and has received widespread media attention. His award-winning documentaries, which address many of the same issues examined in Anonymization, have been shown at festivals around the world. Pittman’s photographs and documentary films have been exhibited internationally and are in public and private collections. He is currently at work on his latest project, The Bubble.
