Shivani Gupta’s practice and primary artistic interest in photography is underscored by performances staged for the camera, as well as by the documentation of live art. These performances have revealed the possibilities of the camera as an agent of personal and cultural myth creation, where photography can be used to excavate the magic of places and their people to present a reality that is not within the frame of the banal.

Trained classically in the Indian dance form Mohiniattam, she tends to privilege the visual over the performative, beginning with the interior (the body) and moving to the exterior through the qualitative matter: the camera. She explores the incorporation of storytelling through performing represented events, while at the same time abstracting the presentation with a stylized use of space through photography and the landscape. She is currently working from her studio in Goa, India.
